Alan Ball
The sudden and tragic death of England World Cup hero Alan Ball MBE at just 61 years of age was marked by affectionate and respectful tributes at football grounds all over the country and particularly at Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal and Southampton, the clubs he served with such distinction as a player, and Portsmouth, Manchester City, Stoke and Exeter, which formed part of his long and varied managerial career.
Alan Ball was, at 21, the youngest of Sir Alf Ramseys World Cup winning side of 1966 and those who are old enough will never forget the inspiring sight of him in that historic final at Wembley perpetual motion immortalised in commentator Kenneth Wolstenholmes phrase running himself daft. Within the professional game he will always be remembered and revered not only as a fierce competitor but one of the best one touch players of his generation, and arguably of all time. As for the fans, he was loved and admired not only for his great ability but for the fact that he always had time for everyone.
