Liverpool
Spare a thought for Liverpool. They fly out to Japan for the World Club Championships, full of optimism after their sensational recent form in the premiership. Remarkably, there is virtually no publicity for the event in this country and precious little in Japan itself. Their manager is grieving following the death of his father, but decides to stay on after he learns that the funeral cannot be delayed. Television coverage is relegated to BBC2. And the game itself ends in the bitter disappointment. Despite 17 corners and 21 goal attempts, Liverpool lose 1-0 to an unadventurous and unimpressive Sao Paulo and the opportunity to become world club champions is gone.
